Legends tell of a mythical bird of fantastic plumage that ignites itself at the end of its life, then rises out of the ashes, born anew. Versions of the legendary creature vary slightly from culture to culture, but in modern symbolism, the phoenix represents rebirth, immortality and renewal.

A similar creature named Garuda appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Throughout the epic Mahabharata, Garuda is invoked as a symbol of warrior-like power and speed. It is also Indonesia's national and cultural symbol.

This Garuda dreamcatcher will not burst into flames, but its black, gold and red beaded weaving are inspired by the glowing embers from whence the firebird was said to be born. Coal black feathers trail elegantly from the flame-wrapped hoop.
